300M Alloy Steel: AMS6257, AMS6419
Tailwind Aerospace Solutions supplies 300M alloy steel bar to AMS6257 and AMS6419 for aerospace manufacturers, MRO providers, and defense contractors that need the highest available strength in a low-alloy steel. 300M is a modified version of 4340 steel with increased silicon and added vanadium, producing an alloy with superior fatigue strength, fracture toughness, and ductility at ultra-high strength levels. It is the standard material for aircraft landing gear and other flight-critical structural components where failure is not an option.
Properties and Performance
The key modifications that separate 300M from standard 4340 are a higher silicon content (approximately 1.45-1.80%) and the addition of vanadium. Silicon significantly improves the alloy's resistance to low-cycle fatigue and temper softening, while vanadium refines the grain structure and enhances hardenability. The result is a steel that maintains toughness and ductility at tensile strengths exceeding 280 ksi, levels where conventional 4340 would exhibit unacceptable brittleness.
300M is produced exclusively as a consumable electrode vacuum remelted (CEVAR) product to AMS 2300 aircraft-quality cleanliness standards. This melting practice ensures extremely low non-metallic inclusion content, providing outstanding transverse ductility, impact strength, and suitability for magnetic particle inspection of finished components.
Common Applications
300M alloy steel is used in aircraft landing gear, flap tracks, slat tracks, structural fittings, actuator housings, and other primary structure components on both commercial and military aircraft. The alloy's ability to maintain fracture toughness at ultra-high strength levels has made it the preferred replacement for 4340 in the most demanding airframe applications. Outside of aerospace, 300M serves in racing drivetrain components and oil and gas equipment subjected to extreme mechanical loading.
Specifications
- AMS6419: Covers 300M bar, forging stock, and mechanical tubing with a carbon content range of 0.40-0.45%. This specification is called out when the higher carbon range is needed for maximum strength after heat treatment.
- AMS6257: Replaces MIL-S-8844 and covers 300M alloy steel produced to aircraft-quality cleanliness via advanced vacuum melting techniques. AMS6257 is specified by major OEMs, including Lockheed Martin and Bombardier, for landing gear and primary structure applications.
Additional applicable specifications include AMS 6417 (carbon range 0.37-0.43%), MIL-S-83135, and ASTM A579. View our complete Steel Rod & Bar page for all available alloy steel grades.

300M vs. 4340: When to Specify 300M
Both grades share a nickel-chromium-molybdenum base chemistry, and 300M can be considered a direct upgrade from 4340 for applications requiring strength above 260 ksi. 4340 remains the more economical choice for applications at lower strength levels. When your specification calls for ultra-high strength with maximum fracture toughness, 300M is the standard.
