400 Series

400 Series Stainless Steel

Tailwind Aerospace Solutions supplies 440 stainless steel bar along with other 400 series grades for applications requiring high hardness, wear resistance, and moderate corrosion protection. Unlike the austenitic 300 series, the 400 series includes martensitic and ferritic stainless steels that can be heat-treated to achieve strength and hardness levels well beyond what austenitic grades can reach. Our 400 series inventory serves aerospace bearing and bushing manufacturers, tooling shops, cutlery producers, and industrial OEMs across multiple sectors.

440 Stainless Steel

440C is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel capable of achieving a Rockwell hardness of Rc 60 after heat treatment. It offers the highest hardness and wear resistance of any stainless steel grade, along with good abrasion resistance that makes it the standard choice for precision bearings, bushings, valve seats, and cutting tools. 440 stainless steel maintains its corrosion resistance best in the hardened condition. Tailwind stocks 440C bar to ASTM A276, AMS 5630, and AMS-QQ-S-763. Browse our full Steel Rod & Bar listing.

430 Stainless Steel

430 stainless steel is a ferritic, straight-chromium grade with moderate corrosion resistance and good ductility. Unlike the martensitic grades in the 400 family, 430 is not heat treatable for increased hardness but offers better formability and lower cost. It is frequently used in architectural trim, automotive components, appliance housings, and food service equipment where appearance and moderate corrosion protection are required.

420 Stainless Steel

420 stainless steel is a martensitic grade that responds well to heat treatment, achieving higher hardness than the ferritic 400 series grades while maintaining useful corrosion resistance. It is commonly specified for surgical instruments, dental tools, mold components, and industrial shafts that require a balance of hardness and moderate chemical resistance.

Common Applications

400 series stainless steels from Tailwind serve aerospace bearing assemblies, precision bushings, valve components, cutting tools, mold tooling, automotive trim, food service equipment, and industrial wear parts. The ability to heat-treat martensitic grades like 440C and 420 to high hardness levels sets the 400 series apart from the austenitic 300 series.
