Inconel 718: Sheets, Plates & Bars
Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium superalloy engineered for exceptional strength, oxidation resistance, and long-term performance at elevated temperatures. First developed in the early 1960s, it remains the most widely used nickel-based superalloy in the world, and a standard material specification across aerospace, defense, power generation, and oil and gas.
Tailwind Aerospace Solutions supplies Inconel 718 bar and sheet to AMS and ASTM specifications, with full certifications and complete material traceability. You can view our current nickel inventory on our Other Metals product page.
Material Properties
Inconel 718 delivers high tensile, yield, and creep-rupture strength at temperatures up to 1300°F (704°C), with oxidation resistance up to 1800°F (982°C). Its composition — primarily nickel and chromium, with significant additions of iron, niobium, molybdenum, titanium, and aluminum — produces a superalloy with outstanding mechanical stability in extreme thermal environments.
One of the defining characteristics of alloy 718 is its slow precipitation-hardening response. This allows the material to be welded and formed without triggering spontaneous age hardening during heating and cooling cycles — a significant processing advantage over other high-strength nickel alloys.
Specifications
Inconel 718 is available to the following AMS specifications:
- AMS5662 — Bars, forgings, and rings (solution treated)
- AMS5663 — Bars, forgings, and rings (precipitation hardened)
- AMS5596 — Sheet, strip, and plate (solution treated)
- AMS5597 — Sheet, strip, and plate (precipitation hardened)
Additional applicable specifications include ASTM B637 (forgings) and ASTM B670 (plate, sheet, and strip). All material is supplied with full mill certifications traceable to heat and lot, in compliance with our AS9100D and ISO 9001 certified quality program.
Inconel 718 Bar
Inconel 718 bar is the most commonly specified form of this alloy and is used extensively in machined components requiring high strength and dimensional stability. Typical applications include jet engine discs, fasteners, turbine spacers, high-temperature bolts, and structural aerospace components. We stock round bar to AMS5662 and AMS5663 in a range of diameters to support both production and prototype requirements.
Inconel 718 Sheet
Inconel 718 sheet to AMS5596 and AMS5597 is used in airframe panels, heat shields, combustion hardware, and formed structural components where thin-gauge, high-strength material is required. Sheet is available in solution-treated and precipitation-hardened conditions depending on your downstream processing needs.
