Aluminum Grades and Features
High-performance industries like aerospace rely on aluminum structures and components because of aluminum’s excellent strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and versatility.
6061
Magnesium-silicon alloy 6061 has excellent corrosion resistance, good strength, and weldability. It is heat-treatable, allowing for enhanced mechanical properties through various tempers, with T6 being the most common.
6061 offers a good balance of machinability, corrosion resistance, and formability. Plus, its ability to resist stress corrosion cracking further enhances its reliability in demanding environments.
2024
2024 is a primarily copper alloy with exceptional strength and fatigue resistance but reduced corrosion resistance compared to other grades. It is ideal for applications where strength and fatigue performance are critical.
Anodization or coatings improve 2024’s durability in corrosive environments. The T3 temper, which balances strength with limited ductility, makes it suitable for high-performance applications.
2219
2219 is a high-strength copper alloy with trace amounts of manganese and zirconium. It has excellent weldability and superior performance in high-temperature environments.
Despite its high strength, 2219 requires additional surface protection to enhance its corrosion resistance. Its exceptional performance under thermal stress and fatigue resistance makes it a popular choice for critical aerospace uses.
7075
7075 is a high-strength zinc alloy with small amounts of magnesium, copper, and chromium. It is one of the strongest aluminum alloys available, with a strength comparable to some steels.
7075 offers good fatigue resistance and is heat-treatable. Its primary drawback is its lower corrosion resistance compared to 6061, though processes like anodizing can improve its durability.
7050
7050 is another high-strength zinc alloy with magnesium added specifically to improve corrosion resistance. Copper is added to enhance resistance to stress corrosion cracking. It is also heat-treatable, with T7451 being a common temper that balances strength and stress corrosion resistance. Its superior toughness and durability make it a preferred choice for demanding structural applications.
Aluminum Industry Applications
Aluminum is durable in harsh environments. Its lightweight properties are ideal when fuel efficiency is a concern, and it also performs reliably in heat-sensitive components. Aluminum applications include:
- Aerospace: Fuselages and wing structures
- Automotive: Engine components and body panels
- Energy: Solar panel frames and wind turbine components
- Electronics: Heat sinks and smartphone casings
Aluminum is also prevalent in consumer products like window frames and home appliances.

Frequently Asked Questions
A qualified aerospace aluminum supplier should hold current AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certification, provide full material traceability back to the original mill heat via Certified Material Test Reports (CMTRs), and stock aerospace-grade alloys to AMS and ASTM specifications rather than commercial-grade equivalents. Tailwind Aerospace Solutions meets all of these requirements, so every plate, sheet, bar, rod, and tube we ship is backed by documented quality and full chain-of-custody traceability.
The distinction comes down to thickness. Aluminum sheet is generally defined as material under 0.249" thick, while aluminum plate refers to stock 0.250" and thicker, a standard set by ASTM B209, the governing specification for aluminum and aluminum-alloy sheet and plate. As an aluminum sheet supplier and aluminum plate supplier, Tailwind stocks both forms across multiple grades and tempers so you can source the exact gauge your application requires without switching vendors.
We stock 6061, 2024, 2219, 7075, and 7050, along with rod, bar, and tubing in these and other grades. Each alloy is available in aerospace-qualified specifications, including common callouts like AMS 4045 and AMS 4037 for 7075 and 2024 sheet/plate. If you need a grade not listed here, contact our team. We regularly source hard-to-find and specialty alloys on request.
As an aluminum bar supplier, Tailwind stocks round, flat, and hex bar, plus rod and tubing, in the same aerospace-grade alloys we carry in sheet and plate form, including 6061, 2024, 2219, 7075, and 7050. This lets engineering and procurement teams source matching material across multiple forms from a single, certified supplier.
Yes. Every shipment from Tailwind includes full documentation, including Certified Material Test Reports (CMTRs) traceable to the original mill heat. This traceability is a core requirement of our AS9100D-certified quality management system and ensures the material you receive is verifiable and audit-ready for aerospace, defense, and other regulated applications.
Aerospace-grade aluminum is manufactured and tested to specific AMS (Aerospace Material Specification) or ASTM specifications, with documented chemistry, mechanical properties, and processing controls that exceed typical commercial-grade requirements. Ordering from an AS9100D-certified distributor like Tailwind ensures the material has passed through a documented receiving inspection process and comes with full certification, so you're not left guessing whether stock meets your drawing callout.
Yes. Tailwind can supply aluminum sheet, plate, bar, rod, and tubing cut to your specified dimensions, reducing waste and eliminating extra processing steps on your end. Reach out to our team with your size and grade requirements for a custom quote.
Sourcing hard-to-find specialty aluminum is one of our specialties. Beyond our regularly stocked 6061, 2024, 2219, 7075, and 7050 grades, Tailwind's supplier network allows us to locate less common alloys, tempers, and forms that many distributors can't source, so you're not stuck redesigning around limited material availability.
