PH Grades Stainless Steel
Tailwind Aerospace Solutions stocks 15-5PH, 17-4PH, and 13-8MO precipitation-hardened stainless steel bar, plate, forged block, and sheet for aerospace, defense, oil and gas, and other high-performance manufacturing applications. PH stainless steels combine the corrosion resistance of conventional stainless with the ability to achieve high strength through age-hardening heat treatments. This makes them the preferred bar material for critical structural components where both mechanical performance and environmental resistance are required.
15-5PH Stainless Steel
15-5PH is a chromium-nickel-copper precipitation-hardening stainless steel containing approximately 15% chromium and 5% nickel. It is a variant of the older 17-4PH grade, developed to provide improved toughness and more uniform mechanical properties in all directions. With a minimum tensile strength of 161,000 psi in the H900 condition, 15-5PH is widely specified for aerospace structural fittings, gears, shafts, and valve components. Tailwind stocks 15-5PH bar to ASTM A564 and AMS 5659. We also carry 15-5PH sheet and plate to AMS 5862.
17-4PH Stainless Steel
17-4PH is the most widely used precipitation-hardened stainless steel and serves as the baseline grade in this family. It is a chromium-nickel-copper alloy that can be heat treated to a range of strength levels depending on the aging temperature selected. In the H900 condition, 17-4PH reaches tensile strengths exceeding 190,000 psi. The alloy is weldable and forgeable, making it suitable for a broad range of aerospace, chemical, and petrochemical components. Tailwind supplies 17-4PH bar to ASTM A564 and AMS 5643, along with 17-4PH sheet and plate to AMS 5604.
13-8MO Stainless Steel
13-8MO is a precipitation-hardened stainless steel that offers the highest combination of strength, hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance in the PH stainless family. Its chemistry is based on chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and aluminum, producing a refined martensitic structure after age hardening. 13-8MO achieves tensile strengths above 220,000 psi in the H950 condition while maintaining good ductility and transverse properties. It is specified for the most demanding aerospace hardware, including landing gear components, actuator parts, and structural fittings. Tailwind stocks 13-8MO bar to ASTM A564 and AMS 5629.
