Properties and Performance
6AL-4V is an alpha-beta titanium alloy containing 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. Aluminum strengthens the alpha phase and improves resistance to creep deformation, while vanadium stabilizes the beta phase and further increases strength. In the annealed condition, 6AL-4V delivers a minimum yield strength of 120 ksi at roughly half the weight of steel, giving it one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios of any structural metal.
The alloy is heat treatable by solution treatment and aging (STA) to achieve even higher strength levels. It shows good creep resistance, elevated-temperature strength, and retains useful mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures. 6AL-4V is weldable using inert gas shielding, and complex shapes can be produced through hot forming. It machines similarly to austenitic stainless steel and responds well to both conventional and CNC machining operations.

- Sheet and Plate: Tailwind supplies 6AL-4V titanium sheet to AMS4911, the primary specification for titanium 6AL-4V sheet, strip, and plate in the annealed condition. AMS4911 material is recommended for service temperatures from -350°F to 750°F and is specified for airframe skins, firewalls, structural panels, and exhaust components.
- Bar and Forging Stock: We stock 6AL-4V titanium bar to AMS4928 (annealed bar, wire, forgings, and rings) and AMS6931 (annealed bars, forgings, and forging stock up to 10 inches in diameter). AMS4928 and AMS6931 are the two most widely called-out specifications for 6AL-4V bar in aerospace procurement. Both cover material produced through vacuum arc remelt (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melt (PAM) processes for aircraft-quality cleanliness.

Common Applications
6AL-4V titanium is used in aircraft structural frames, bulkheads, wing spars, turbine engine compressor blades and discs, fasteners, landing gear fittings, helicopter rotor components, and spacecraft structures.
